Auto Insurance and Teenagers – What Parents Should Do to save money
Do you have teenagers starting to drive? If so, you want to read this story carefully. My neighbor , “Roger” was all excited about his daughter learning to drive. “She is so careful”, he bragged. So shy and quiet, such a good child and good student too. “That is great”, I said. “Is she taking drivers ed?” “No”, says Roger, ” Why waste that money. I am doing a fine job teaching her and she is such a good driver. I am so proud.” Well, a few months later we are talking and Roger was complaining about the shocker of how much his auto insurance premiums went up when his daughter was added to his family auto policy – like $1,200 a year. His real embarrassment was when he learned that he could have saved over $600 with the drivers ed course – which cost half that much – the one his daughter (the great driver) did not need. Poor Roger. Of course, the real savings are the $600 times the 4 years that the credit is carried. Wow, that is over $2,400 in savings from a short little drivers ed course. So, when your teenagers are ready to drive, remember. School isn’t out yet. Oh, and speaking of school, this is a great way to guarantee that your smart teenager keep his or her grades nice and high. Besides a big credit for drivers ed, the insurance companies also give big credits for good grades. Now, if your teenagers are like mine, driving is so important that there is nothing they will not do to keep those keys.
